We talk a lot about pollution and environment but we do not realize the importance of the existence of cow in keeping environment pollution free and pure. There is no better instrument to fight pollution and environmental problem, than cows.
Every Hindu before his last breath wants to donate a cow, drinks gangajal and listens to Geeta or recite Gayatri Mantra. Ganga unfortunately is being polluted, study of Geeta is hardly seen, we have forgotten Gayatri Mantra. There is utter devaluation of our culture and Hinduism. Cow is in the centre point of our culture of Sages and culture of agriculture. Ashramas of sages used to have goshalas and a number of healthy cows used to be there. Cows used to give them milk and nutrition to all the scholars who have enriched our ancient scripture of Veda and Upanishada. Students used to take their education in Gurukuls and then join grihastha ashrama. These all contributed to a better and healthier society. Cows were well protected and well bred. Even Lord Krishna loved to call him Gopala (Server of Cow).
Cow has financial importance, but should we see it only from that angle? In our scripture veda gou (cow) has been given the status of mother. There are five mothers in every Hindu’s life 1. Biological mother, 2. Gomata, 3. Earth (Bhumata), 4. Mother Goddess, 5. Ganga Mata, why so much importance is given to gomata in our scriptures, Vedas and Puranas? Cow is the symbol of love, compassion, tolerance as our mother. She is soft natured as my mother is. She gives us milk which gives us healthy and nutrition.
Gomata and Yagna is almost synonymous . It is not possible to perform yagna without cowghee. It makes our yagna successful. Gomata is past and also future.
Sayang pratashchya satatang homkale mahadyute!
Gawo dadati wai homyamrishibhyo purusharshava!!
Hay glorious Sage! Cow only gives you the ghee, etc needed for your havan in the morning and in the evening.
Our culture gives importance to cow amongst all animals Gou and Brahman belongs to the same clan. Both are pure soul. Brahmana performs yagna and recites Ved mantra. Gomata supplies all that is required for havan.
Rigveda mantra has given cow the status of immortality it is the navel of nectar.
Mata rudranang duhita vasunang Swasaditya namamsitasya nabhi
Pra nu wochong chikitushai janai maa gamagamaditing vadhishtha
I have created gou (cow) for the nutrition of you all. Every bit of cow makes the world sacred, urine of cow. Cowdung, milk, curd, ghee (panchagabya) if consumed curbs sin. A religious person will consume cow milk, curd or ghee. They are the best in the world and the holiest and liked by every one. Anna (Food) keeps its impact for five days, milk seven days, curd twenty days and ghee one month. Gou gives us dharma, astha, kama and moksha (gou purushartha).
The place smeared with cowdung is sacred. That is why there is a custom of smearing cowdung in kitchen and place where yagna is performed. Laxmi stays in cowdung in gomutra. Sacred ganges in cowmilk, ghee stays in somdev and Goddess Saraswati is gorachana. Yagna is the incarnation of Vishnu and he stays in every part of cow. That is why cow is considered to be the symbol of God Vishnu. As nectar consumed by vayu, agni, subarna, samudra and gods is never considered as lea rings in the same way if calf drinks milk of cow is never spoiled. Cow is the greatest creation in the world. Nectar acquired from Samudra manthan was kept protected in the navel of cow. This signifies the importance of cow in our life.
In Puranas there is a mention of “GomatiVidya” or “go Savitri stotra”. These two scriptures are written by Vyasdev. In the puranas it is mentioned that for the welfare of the Earth best way is to perform yagna and study veda. Yagna performance is totally dependent on cow milk products. Crops are grown by oxen and charu, havishya, purodash is made out of the crops.
Glory of cow is depicted in Vishnudharmattara Shivdharmattara purana, symbol of dharma is ox.
In the stable (goshala) of Srirama there were numerous cows. They were looked after well. Godaan is performed from these cows. In Ramrajya. cow was worshipped and service to cow was the duty of king

In Indian culture cow is of utmost importance. Every rural house mostly possess a cow. There children grown up with the calf . We also bring up the calf like our children. We even do namsansakara of the calf. Before Diwali in the 12th day of moon in the month Aswin Varsa or namkaransanskar is done every year. This day is known as Vasu Baras, we worship cow and calf also. On Gopastmi parv also we worship cowmother.
In the same way Oxen are worshipped. This is done in no moon day (amavasya). This day is known as pithori Amavasya. Oxen gets rest on this day and they are decorated with garlands and ornaments. Farmer wives takes out their paijeb (ornament of the ankle) and puts it on oxen. They prepare puranpoli (sweet roti) and offer to ox. A rally of such decorated oxen is taken out with all pomp and grandeur. This is a way of showing our gratitude to oxen who serves for us for the whole life. This is the soul of Indian culture. It has compassion for each and every living being. We see divinity in every soul.
